CUTLERY

Most of the items I have on hand for current processing are current - late 2011, early 2012.
However, this box of cutlery is from the past. I'm not sure what date it would be but I am fairly sure that it is pre-1993, the year we got the new kitchen and the doubleglazed windows. My recollection is that these items were removed from the cutlery drawer in the course of creating our 'new look' kitchen.

Spread out, this is what the contents looks like. As you can see, many items are tarnished. Of course they were only E.P.N.S. (Electro-plated nickle silver), not solid silver. You can read a bit about the process here at the Sheffield cutlery website

I decided to extract a few small items from the box to keep, and have put them in Brown Box 2. This is the beginning of assembling the FAMILY SILVER! Other items for inclusion are currently in the long press beside the window in the front room.

Other more recent items removed yesterday from the current cutlery drawers include the following items.

  • Black plastic slatted spoon and fish-slice which are somewhat 'wobbly to use'
  • Card with spare 'valve rubber' for Prestige pressure cooker - probably 1970's. I never did get the hang of pressure cooking. Probably was traumatized by two events (see next posting)
  • White grater included free with slicer bought at Ideal Homes exhibition, unknown date, but possibly 1980's
  • Cutter for crinkle chips - once belonged to Aileen Lane McGuire. She put the yellow wire around the handle to make it easier to hold.
  • Pastry 'crumber' - ingenious items for 'rubbing in' fat into flour when making pastry. Once belonged to Aileen Lane McGuire.
  • Small size sieve - often used for straining skin from boiled milk.
  • Metal tin opener with corkscrew in the handle
  • Small scissors - once used by children in New Cana Pre-school which closed in 1982.

This last image shows a few more items that I didn't throw out
The safety plug from the pressure cooker which I want to write more about
The two items I got from my mother
The scissors which I plan to use on Saturday at National Drawing day at the Square where I am going to show people they can draw with a scissors even if they 'can't draw a straight line'.
